You can't pray away the gay.
They stand on the outskirts of society,
They take the brunt of judging glares,
They pretend not to hear the strident words,
They are bullied, ridiculed, and forgotten,
They are cast out of their homes,
What wrong have they done?
So because they are who they are,
You cut of all ties,
So that, no one could think that,
You too are different,
Special in your own way,
They were our friends,
Now they are our enemies,
They were our brothers or sisters,
Now they are strangers,
They were once our mothers, fathers,
Whom we have abandoned,
They are our children
Whom we have estranged,
Because we are scared,
Scared of anything in any way different,
Because they don't fit the typical all American mold,
Therefore, we shun them,
Push them out of our lives,
So that we don't have to face them,
What we do not realize is that we too are like them,
We can deny that a thousand times over,
However, we cannot change the fact,
That we all are different, unique,
None of us will fit that mold,
Red Riding HoodI want to believe people so badly when they say they won’t bite
that I contemplate climbing into their smiling jaws
thinking that it might be better to be split in two than left hanging.
But always, I draw my red hood and flit back into the forest
running in the shadows of pathways, never stepping into clearings
because I’ve spent my whole life in the wilderness
and I still can’t tell the wolves from the woodsmen.
